A Journey of Inspiration and Inclusion

Submerge in Sensory (SNS) was created out of a deeply personal journey, one rooted in love, understanding, and a profound desire to make a difference in the lives of individuals with special needs. Growing up alongside three incredible siblings – each diagnosed with autism, I embarked on a path that would forever shape their purpose and the purpose of those like them. My siblings played a pivotal role in the creation of this nonprofit. The journey wasn't always easy, but it was undeniably transformative. Interacting with my siblings at various stages of their growth and development offered a unique window into the world of sensory experiences.

As an Occupational Therapy student, I was introduced to the concept of sensory integration. Dr. A. Jean Ayres' pioneering work in sensory integration theory illuminated the critical role of sensory processing in shaping motor skills, behavior, and learning. I began to realize the immense impact that sensory experiences had on my siblings development. The idea of "submerging in sensory" emerged as a powerful metaphor for creating a nurturing environment tailored to the needs of individuals like my siblings. The term "sensory" holds significance beyond the conventional understanding of our five senses. It encompasses a holistic view of how individuals interact with their surroundings, particularly crucial for those with special needs.

I vividly remember the efforts my parents undertook to create a comfortable space for my siblings. They adjusted the lighting, managed the sounds, and even prepared special meals. All these efforts were aimed at providing an environment where my siblings could grow and flourish. These early experiences taught me the importance of sensory well-being for their overall comfort and development. However, finding safe and inclusive spaces proved to be a challenge. Traditional venues like malls, amusement parks, and movie theaters often fell short in catering to the unique sensory needs of individuals like my siblings. Safety was a primary concern, and the absence of spaces designed for specific sensory needs posed a significant challenge.

The vision for SNS crystallized – a center that transcend the limitations, providing a space where individuals with special needs and their families could immerse themselves in sensory experiences. A place not bound by restrictions, where the simple act of walking in would be an invitation to explore, relax, learn, and connect. Submerge in Sensory aspires to be the haven that my siblings and countless others like them truly deserve. A place where every sensory encounter nurtures growth, where the journey toward progress is marked by compassion, patience, and unyielding support. This nonprofit stands as a testament to the power of love, the potential of understanding, and the unwavering dedication to creating a world that embraces and celebrates every individual, regardless of their unique needs.
